Bubba Watson is known for doing things differently, like having a pink shaft in his driver, firing golf balls through water melons and being one quarter of the golf boy band “The Golf Boys.”

  • Golf Insurance Matters

The latest article in our how to series turns the spotlight on some of the unexpected things that can happen at the driving range – from ricochets to self-inflicted injuries – and why it pays to be insured. With winter closing in and less daylight hours in which to hit the course the best place to keep swinging is at the driving range. The driving range is a great hangout for golfers of all skill levels and abilities. Given that your local driving range could be filled with hackers and heroes it’s not impossible that an innocent trip to whack some balls could end in disaster, injury or a sizeable legal bill.

  • La Reservae Golf Club, Costa Del Sol

A new course designed by Cabell B. Robinson, La Reserva Club De Golf had only recently opened but I would never have guessed. On arrival it was obvious the course was in perfect condition. The opening hole at La Reserva is a straight par four with well designed bunkers and an attractive green – a good, if understated opener, but on the 2nd tee, however, the front nine opens up before you and you get an idea of the challenge that lies ahead. Set out in a small valley with wonderful changes in elevation, attractive contours and great scenery, the next eight holes weave back in forth in fantastic fashion.

  • Lie of the Land

A caddie at The Old Course at St Andrews, Turnberry or Troon would tell you that it takes time to get to know the subtleties and nuances of links land and learn the bounce of the ball. Often slopes and natural features can funnel the ball towards the hole, squeeze extra yards from a drive or prevent a ball from going in a hazard.

PHOENIX -- John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO, will be inducted into the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame on November 25th for his business leadership and his contributions to golf. His parents, PING founder Karsten Solheim and his wife, Louise, preceded him into the Hall. Karsten was inducted posthumously in 2000; Louise, who turned 95 in June, was honored in 2004. Ceremonies will be held at Gainey Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale.
"I am delighted to join my parents in the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame," said Solheim, 67. "In more than a half-century of doing business here, we're proud of the role we've played in helping contribute to the growth of Phoenix and communities around the state. As a family-owned business, we get our greatest satisfaction from creating jobs for the more than 800 employees who make us the success we are today. And because golf is so important to Arizona's vitality, PING will always play a key role in sponsoring efforts to promote the game and grow participation at every level."Solheim got his start in the business when he was 13, working alongside his dad on early putter designs in the family's garage. He aspired to be an architect, but as PING's business expanded, he turned his passion to designing golf clubs and helping Karsten grow the privately-held entity into one of the most influential golf companies in the world. As chairman and CEO, he leads the company's strategic direction and oversees the design and development of PING® products.
"Thinking back to my years working with Karsten, we still run the business with a hands-on approach," Solheim said. "Even though we've grown beyond what Karsten and I could have imagined, we've always focused on the same principles — performance, innovation, and custom fitting — as the foundations for engineering products that make the game easier for golfers of all abilities."
From 1961 to 1966, the company operated out of the family garage north of Phoenix near Scottsdale, Ariz. Since then, the headquarters have been located in North Phoenix, where the company occupies 27 buildings spread over 52 acres. Karsten Manufacturing Corporation and its subsidiaries employ approximately 1,200 people worldwide and conduct business in more than 70 countries.
PING is a registered trademark of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation in the U.S. and other countries.

Lynn Swann, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl wins in the 1970s and 1980s, has been named the new Independent Director on the PGA of America Board of Directors.
Swann, who sits on the Board of Directors of several corporations and owns a marketing and consulting company, will be formally sworn in by delegates at the 97th PGA Annual Meeting, on Nov. 23, in San Diego. Swann replaces John Jacob, of Aventura, Fla., and will serve a three-year term.
"The PGA of America is very pleased to welcome Lynn Swann, one of America's most celebrated athletes, to the PGA Board of Directors," said PGA President Ted Bishop. "Lynn's legendary career of performing on a global stage extends to his expertise in business, where he has connected with leaders of organizations in this country. We believe that he brings that same invaluable insight and commitment to excellence as a member of the PGA Board of Directors."
A resident of Sewickley, Pa., Swann earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California in 1974. He was an All-American for the Trojans, including the 1972 squad that went undefeated and won the national championship.
Swann was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1974 and was a major contributor to their dynasty. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
"I am looking forward to the next three years of serving The PGA of America and the game of golf," said Swann, 61. "I came to the game late in life, but hope over the next three years to help the PGA bring golf to so many more people early in life."
Swann is on the board of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, Caesar's Entertainment, Fluor Corporation and the National Football Foundation. He is a trustee for American Homes for Rent.
Swann is the president of Swann, Inc., a marketing and consulting company, and the Lynn Swann Group. He is also a co-owner of the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League.
Since 1979, Swann has been the National Spokesman for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, serving on that board from the mid-1980s to 2011. Swann served as Chairman of the President's Council of Physical Fitness from 2002-2005, during the first administration of George W. Bush. In 2006, he ran for Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Swann and his wife, Charena, are the parents of two sons, Shafer and Braxton.
The PGA Board of Directors is composed of the Association's president, vice president, secretary, honorary president, and 17 directors. The directors, who each serve three-year terms, include representatives from each of The PGA's 14 districts, two Independent Directors and a member of the PGA Tour.

SAN DIEGO -- Lamkin Corporation, the original manufacturer of premium golf grips, is very proud to announce the addition of PGA TOUR players Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele to its endorsement team. The new partnership formalizes the company's longstanding relationship with both players, who have used Lamkin's best-selling Crossline grips throughout their professional golf careers.
"I am extremely proud to officially welcome Keegan and Brendan to the Lamkin team," said Lamkin CEO, Bob Lamkin. "Their on-course accomplishments are outstanding, of course, but it is their exceptional character and passion for the game that make them ideal ambassadors for the Lamkin brand."
Keegan Bradley has won three PGA TOUR events, including his dramatic win at the 2011 PGA Championship during his breakthrough Rookie-of-the-Year season. He is currently ranked 16th in the Official World Golf Ranking. Also joining the Tour in 2011, Brendan Steele secured a PGA TOUR victory at the 2011 Valero Texas Open and has since amassed over 20 Top 25 finishes.
In addition to continuing to play Lamkin golf grips, Keegan and Brendan will be prominently featured in a number of Lamkin's 2014 advertising, promotional and social media campaigns. Both players will also provide Lamkin Grips with ongoing product development and player testing feedback. Their most current grip of choice is the Crossline ACE 3GEN, made with the patented Advanced Cohesive Elastomer compound. Lamkin's proprietary ACE material, combined with the distinctive Crossline surface pattern, provides golfers with an exceptionally secure grip connection in all weather conditions.
Lamkin is also represented by Arnold Palmer, arguably the greatest golfer and golf ambassador in the history of the game. Mr. Palmer has been using Lamkin grips on his equipment for more than 60 years, becoming an official spokesman for the company in 1997.

Water coolers and trash cans made from recycled plastic; compost generated from food scraps and grass clippings; biodiesel fuel processed with leftover cooking oil; and effluent water from treatment plants are just a few of the ways Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) members implement recycling programs at their golf facilities.
These efforts are being highlighted on Nov. 15 as a part of America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, a national non-profit organization that brings people together to build and sustain vibrant communities.
A GCSAA survey reveals that its members and their facilities are highly active in recycling/reusing items in the golf course management operations waste stream. For example, 92 percent of facilities that have oils in their waste stream recycle or reuse them. Other recycle/reuse rates include equipment/golf car batteries (93 percent), hydraulic fluids (89 percent), fryer/cooking grease (89 percent), pallets (79 percent), tires (77 percent) and aluminum (76 percent). Learn more about golf course recycling efforts.
"We tend to think about the environmental attributes of golf courses in terms of what we see - wildlife habitat, green space, healthy turf that filters impurities," GCSAA Director of Environmental Programs Greg Lyman said. "But what we don't see is just as or even more impactful. Golf course operations lend themselves very well to recycling programs, and the data suggests GCSAA members are committed to them."
Lyman notes that the concept brings out the creativity in GCSAA members. For example:
GCSAA Class A member Terry Stratton at Little River (Calif.) Inn Golf & Tennis, with a meager annual budget of $182,000, recycles plastic bottles, aluminum and scrap metal (80 percent he says) to fund continuing education for his staff.
Dan Dinelli, CGCS and a GCSAA Class A member at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill., built three vermin composters utilizing red wigglers (earthworms) to help degrade food waste from the kitchen to reduce waste, save energy and produce a rich organic material that improves plant and soil health.
GCSAA Class A member James Brown, CGCS at Newport Dunes Country Club in Port Aransas, Texas, cleans equipment with a low-volume pressure washer to conserve water. The water is then filtered through a grease trap. A waste management company is contracted monthly to remove the solids accumulated in these traps and the filtered water is reused.
James Houchen, GCSAA Class A member at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan., and other staff bought more than three tons of recycled products last year and reduced other costs, which resulted in $32,000 in savings. The effort, which won an EPA award, includes the collection of aluminum cans, branches, cardboard boxes, fats, oil, greases, food, glass, light bulbs, mixed paper, phonebooks, plastics, tires and yard trimmings.
Brett Hetland, CGCS and Class A member at Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji, Iowa, has won numerous environmental awards for programs that include significant waste reduction and recycling. He has lowered the number of waste pick-ups from five to three a week and has helped the facility to save money through the reduce, reuse, recycle philosophy.
"I applaud our members in the effort they have taken to implement recycling programs," Lyman said. "It really gets to the heart of sustainability because you are talking about having a positive impact on the environment, on the budget and the golfer experience. America Recycles Day gives us a platform to highlight what is happening on a daily basis throughout the year."

Adam Scott says the World Cup's change from purely a teams event to include significant individual incentives has added to its appeal.
Scott, fresh from following up his Australian PGA win with a second straight Australian Masters title, has already predicted he and Australian teammate Jason Day will win the World Cup.
It starts on Thursday at Royal Melbourne, the site of Scott's Masters win on Sunday.
For each nation that has a pair competing in the teams component, the two players' scores will be combined to decide who wins the cup.
But while teams will split A$1 million (NZ$1.1m) in prizemoney, the individuals will share A$7m (NZ$7.9m) and, for the first time, the tournament also attracts rankings points.
That adds to the appeal for US Masters champion Scott, who inched his way a little closer to Tiger Woods and the No.1 ranking with his Australian Masters win.
''It's an important tournament, it's a World Golf Championship event and now it's got that individual focus. I think it's going to take a step up from where it was,'' Scott said.
''Certainly you can see that a lot of guys are coming a long way to play for a huge purse and world ranking points.
''I'd like to win a World Golf Championship event next week as well, individually and as a team with Jase.''
American world No.8 Matt Kuchar, runner-up to Scott on Sunday, was part of the US team that won the most recent World Cup with Gary Woodland.
This time he's paired with Kevin Streelman.
Other notable teams include Italians Francesco Molinari and Matteo Manassero, both ranked inside the world top 40, and Irish duo Graeme McDowell, the world No.11, and Shane Lowry (No.75).
