Bubba Watson is known for doing things differently, like having a pink shaft in his driver, firing golf balls through water melons and being one quarter of the golf boy band “The Golf Boys.”

  • Golf Insurance Matters

The latest article in our how to series turns the spotlight on some of the unexpected things that can happen at the driving range – from ricochets to self-inflicted injuries – and why it pays to be insured. With winter closing in and less daylight hours in which to hit the course the best place to keep swinging is at the driving range. The driving range is a great hangout for golfers of all skill levels and abilities. Given that your local driving range could be filled with hackers and heroes it’s not impossible that an innocent trip to whack some balls could end in disaster, injury or a sizeable legal bill.

  • La Reservae Golf Club, Costa Del Sol

A new course designed by Cabell B. Robinson, La Reserva Club De Golf had only recently opened but I would never have guessed. On arrival it was obvious the course was in perfect condition. The opening hole at La Reserva is a straight par four with well designed bunkers and an attractive green – a good, if understated opener, but on the 2nd tee, however, the front nine opens up before you and you get an idea of the challenge that lies ahead. Set out in a small valley with wonderful changes in elevation, attractive contours and great scenery, the next eight holes weave back in forth in fantastic fashion.

  • Lie of the Land

A caddie at The Old Course at St Andrews, Turnberry or Troon would tell you that it takes time to get to know the subtleties and nuances of links land and learn the bounce of the ball. Often slopes and natural features can funnel the ball towards the hole, squeeze extra yards from a drive or prevent a ball from going in a hazard.

Lynn Swann, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl wins in the 1970s and 1980s, has been named the new Independent Director on the PGA of America Board of Directors.
Swann, who sits on the Board of Directors of several corporations and owns a marketing and consulting company, will be formally sworn in by delegates at the 97th PGA Annual Meeting, on Nov. 23, in San Diego. Swann replaces John Jacob, of Aventura, Fla., and will serve a three-year term.
"The PGA of America is very pleased to welcome Lynn Swann, one of America's most celebrated athletes, to the PGA Board of Directors," said PGA President Ted Bishop. "Lynn's legendary career of performing on a global stage extends to his expertise in business, where he has connected with leaders of organizations in this country. We believe that he brings that same invaluable insight and commitment to excellence as a member of the PGA Board of Directors."
A resident of Sewickley, Pa., Swann earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California in 1974. He was an All-American for the Trojans, including the 1972 squad that went undefeated and won the national championship.
Swann was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1974 and was a major contributor to their dynasty. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
"I am looking forward to the next three years of serving The PGA of America and the game of golf," said Swann, 61. "I came to the game late in life, but hope over the next three years to help the PGA bring golf to so many more people early in life."
Swann is on the board of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, Caesar's Entertainment, Fluor Corporation and the National Football Foundation. He is a trustee for American Homes for Rent.
Swann is the president of Swann, Inc., a marketing and consulting company, and the Lynn Swann Group. He is also a co-owner of the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League.
Since 1979, Swann has been the National Spokesman for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, serving on that board from the mid-1980s to 2011. Swann served as Chairman of the President's Council of Physical Fitness from 2002-2005, during the first administration of George W. Bush. In 2006, he ran for Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Swann and his wife, Charena, are the parents of two sons, Shafer and Braxton.
The PGA Board of Directors is composed of the Association's president, vice president, secretary, honorary president, and 17 directors. The directors, who each serve three-year terms, include representatives from each of The PGA's 14 districts, two Independent Directors and a member of the PGA Tour.
