• Bubba Watson

Bubba Watson is known for doing things differently, like having a pink shaft in his driver, firing golf balls through water melons and being one quarter of the golf boy band “The Golf Boys.”

  • Golf Insurance Matters

The latest article in our how to series turns the spotlight on some of the unexpected things that can happen at the driving range – from ricochets to self-inflicted injuries – and why it pays to be insured. With winter closing in and less daylight hours in which to hit the course the best place to keep swinging is at the driving range. The driving range is a great hangout for golfers of all skill levels and abilities. Given that your local driving range could be filled with hackers and heroes it’s not impossible that an innocent trip to whack some balls could end in disaster, injury or a sizeable legal bill.

  • La Reservae Golf Club, Costa Del Sol

A new course designed by Cabell B. Robinson, La Reserva Club De Golf had only recently opened but I would never have guessed. On arrival it was obvious the course was in perfect condition. The opening hole at La Reserva is a straight par four with well designed bunkers and an attractive green – a good, if understated opener, but on the 2nd tee, however, the front nine opens up before you and you get an idea of the challenge that lies ahead. Set out in a small valley with wonderful changes in elevation, attractive contours and great scenery, the next eight holes weave back in forth in fantastic fashion.

  • Lie of the Land

A caddie at The Old Course at St Andrews, Turnberry or Troon would tell you that it takes time to get to know the subtleties and nuances of links land and learn the bounce of the ball. Often slopes and natural features can funnel the ball towards the hole, squeeze extra yards from a drive or prevent a ball from going in a hazard.

  • Thorpenes Golf Club

TA Hotel Collection, owners of Thorpeness Hotel and Golf Club in Suffolk, are seeking to attract more golf tourists to the county with the launch of a new trail combining real ale tours and classic seaside golf courses. Thorpeness Golf Club is already one of Southern England’s leading stay-and-play golf break destinations thanks to its 36-bedroom hotel, James Braid designed 18-hole course and location in the picture-perfect holiday village of Thorpeness; a Suffolk tourist hot-spot.

RANCHO MIRAGE — Major champion winners Webb Simpson, Davis Love III, David Toms, Y.E. Yang and John Daly are among the latest names added to the field of the 2014 Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.

Simpson, the 2012 U.S. Open champion, and Love, a PGA champion and captain of the most recent U.S. Ryder Cup team, are among the players who have added their names to the commitment list of the event, to be played Jan. 16-19.

The long-hitting Daly, who last played in the tournament in 2008, leads a list of four golfers who have been given sponsor’s exemption to the 2014 tournament.

Other sponsor’s exemptions into the event include La Quinta’s Scott McCarron, 2000 Humana Challenge winner Jesper Parnevik and Chris DiMarco, who has played in the tournament 14 times.

Other names who have committed to the event include David Toms, a past PGA winner and a staff player for sponsor Humana, 2009 PGA champion Y.E. Yang and Gary Woodland, who lost a playoff in the 2011 Humana. Rising star Billy Horschel, who won his first tour title at the 2013 Zurich Classic, and Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium, a member of the 2012 European Ryder Cup team, are also new to the 2014 field.

The tournament still has four more sponsor’s exemption to hand out before the event.

Daly famously won the 1991 PGA Championship and later added the 1995 British Open title among his five PGA Tour victories. The last of those wins came in 2004 at the tour’s stop in San Diego. Daly last played in the Humana Challenge in 2008, when he withdrew after three rounds of the five-day event with a rib injury.

Daly’s play in 2013 was limited by surgery on his elbow in July. He returned to play in October in the BMW Championship in Shanghai, where he made the cut and finished 48th. He also played two European events this month.

McCarron will be making his 18th appearance in the Humana field dating back to 1995. The part-time La Quinta resident has also worked as a consultant for the tournament in recent years. Parnevik’s 2000 win came at Bermuda Dunes Country Club when he finished 29-under par for the five-day event, one shot ahead of Rory Sabbatini. Parnevik has five career wins, the last in 2001. DiMarco has three top-25 finishes in the Humana and last played in the tournament in 2012 when he finished tied for 30th.

Players already committed to the event include defending champion Brian Gay, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Greg Norman, Brandt Snedeker and Bill Haas.

Players have until Jan. 10, the Friday before the tournament, to commit to the event.
